Here is a simple yet powerful Strategy for Learning to Spell.
In the last 12 years I have used this simple strategy with children and it has remarkably helped children learn spellings easily. Initially one may do the strategy repeatedly until it becomes a natural way of learning spellings. You may want to first play and have fun and learn this strategy for yourself. And once you have learnt the process you will naturally be able to teach it easily to children.
A little background to this method.
You may be familiar with different modes of Thinking Visual, Auditory & Kinesthetic.
A little insight into how these modes work in the area of Learning.
Visual Learning is learning through creating movies in our mind. It involves creating moving pictures with sounds and feelings just like a movie.
Think of your favourite scene or moment from one of your favorite movie.....Great! How did you think of it? Did you go from the beginning of the movie sequentially or were you able to access it instantly at random?
Well most people access the picture randomly. Visual learning is very fast and also enables one to randomly access pictures. Most people who are Excellent at Academics tend to learn creating movies in their mind. They may not be aware of it but do so unconsciously. So if one wants to Excel at academics it can be useful to Learn Visually.
Auditory Learning is learning through creating sounds and words internally.
Think of the 4th line from a nursery rhyme or poem your recall. Those of you who are familiar with Jack & Gill can you think of the 4th line from Jack & Gill. Great!!
How did you access this information? Were you able to retrieve it in an instant or did you have to start saying the poem from beginning till you reached the 4th line to retrieve it?
For most of us we probably had to start saying the poem in our mind or aloud to retrieve the 4th line. This kind of learning is called Auditory Learning. It is sequential in nature and slower than Visual Learning for Academics. However it is extremely useful when we want to learn music.
Kinaesthetic Learning is learning through storing the learning experience through internal muscle memory or tactile senses. This kind of learning can be very slow if used in Academics. However Kinesthetic learning is extremely useful to learn any sport.
We can combine different Learning Styles to find what really works for one to better their Learning. The NLP Spelling Strategy was found to be the Strategy that most Excellent Spellers used.
Here below is how one can learn to develop that Strategy for Learning Spellings.
1. Place the correct spelling of the word in either capital letters or small
letters (avoid cursive writing) in front of you so you can see it easily.
Example: Write it as below
2. Close your eyes and think of something that makes you feel happy and
3. When the feeling is strong, open your eyes and look at the correct spelling.
Take a snapshot of the whole word.
( Like we take a snap through the camera)
Place the spelling or word slightly above your eye level when you take a
snapshot of it.
4. Then move your eyes up (only eyes not neck) and picture the word
i.e. spelling(as an image of the whole word) in your mind's eye. This is done
without seeing the written word.
You may want to close your eyes while picturing it in your mind's eye.
Check if you have a clear image of the letters of the word. If not take another
snapshot of the word in a happy & relaxed state.
5. Look at the spelling of the word in your mind's eye and write down the letters
you see from the first to the last letter.
Check what you have written with the correct spelling.
If incorrect go to step 2.
Example : for the word above
6. Look at the spelling of the word in your mind. As you are seeing it in your
mind's eye, write the letters down from right to left i.e. see the last letter and
write it first. Then see the letter before the last letter and next write it before
the last letter and so on till you see the first letter and write it.).
Check the spelling.
If incorrect, go to step 2.
Example: for the word above
...... T Y L
3rd 2nd 1st
7. Then look at the word spelling as a whole image in your mind and say
the word out loud. (check pronunciation from dictionary)
This helps to link the sight of the word to the sound of the word.
8. RECALL & CHECK.
After learning whenever possible just look up and see the word in your
mind's eye. Check if the spelling of the word is clear in your mind's eye.
If not you may want to do the above process again.
A. Picture the word in your favourite colour.
B. Break the word into groups of three letters and build your picture three
letters at a time. Remember to finally see all the letters together.
C. Adjust the size of the word so that you can see the whole word easily.
Note : Some Tips to help while teaching it to children.
While teaching children you can initially use flash cards with different colours.
Place the flash card in front of their eyes in the middle slightly above eye level.
Check if they are able to see the whole word. Adjust the distance of the flashcard so they can see the whole word while taking a snapshot.
Show them how to take a snapshot.(like we do using a camera)
Elicit a relaxed fun state in the child before showing them the card.
Be Chilled & Have Fun! Our attitude to learning is what makes all the difference to kids to learn easily.
You may also want to join them in the learning game. When children see us learning having Fun, making mistakes and taking it as a Learning Experience they too tend to do the same.
Make it Fun & Relaxed.
It is not about getting it right.....
it is about ENJOYING &
helping children DISCOVER THE JOY OF LEARNING.
Hope this learning is useful to you,
We’d like to share about how Geetha Rao, one of our graduates and Coaches, used NLP and more to heal her physical pain.
These are in her words...
" I had been suffering from a severe upper back ache for more than two and a half months. The pain was excruciating and 24/7. Visits to doctors, gulping medicines and doing the round for physiotherapy was not exciting. I tried some NLP process and it gave me a tad relief. During the last month's coach meet, I spoke to Ashlesh about this and he took this problem to work on in the meet. He asked me questions and finally told me to spread happiness to the trouble spot and love it.
After the session, I religiously started working on it. The first thing I did was to say, 'I am fine' when people asked me about the problem. Then every morning, afternoon and night (like a doctor's prescription) I started this process of placing my palm on the back of my shoulder and said, "Heal, stop paining, I love you like i love the other parts of my body, and let's be happy." I found the pain slowly abating and now, that's after a month, I have a trouble free back. I have not taken any medicines since a month. Once in a while there is a slight twinge, and my hand automatically goes to the back and I mouth the above mentioned words.
Did I prove the physiotherapist who told me it is an aging process and there is no way of getting rid of it, and would have to just continue with the exercises wrong?
I don't know, but this has given me immense confidence that I can heal myself of such niggling problems, and no age problems are going to cripple me of my enthusiasm in life. ( I am in my mid 50's, and wear and tear is going to be the order of the day.)
Some people do think I am slightly off my mind when I talk about this. Even I was quite skeptical about it, but now I know better.”
Geetha, you are an absolute inspiration and even if one person can benefit and heal their pain from reading and knowing your story, the objective would have been met. Thank you!
A couple of years back we had a participant - Jonathan (name changed for privacy purposes), in the NLP Practitioner Program, who worked in area of Sales. He was not doing as well as he would have liked and wanted to get better at his ability to sell and produce better results.
His intention of participating in the NLP Practitioner program was to learn some NLP skills and strategies, which he was told was very effective in "Convincing People”.
During the training, while doing an activity to understand the influence of our Beliefs and Perceptions on our behaviours, we asked him to think about a sales situation and asked him to be aware of what he felt. We asked him “How do you see yourself in that situation?” and “How do you perceive the other person?"
As he became aware of his internal representations, he was shocked to see that in his mind, the other person looked much better and bigger than him and he looked very small and insignificant.
Many people tend to have similar internal representations, when they are struggling to communicate with certain people. It could be their boss, a colleague, a senior person in the organisation or even people who speak with a certain tone and look a certain way.
During the intervention, he had shared that he was taught to get a customer to buy at all costs, even if it meant that he had to "tweak the facts” and make extravagant promises. He stated that he felt extremely uncomfortable selling this way.
We did three things:
1.Shift his perception of himself using submodalites.
2.Shift his perception of the other person.
3.Asked him to imagine himself being confident and selling in a way that was in alignment with his values.
The result was incredible!
On the last day of the course, he shared that he effortlessly closed a sale the previous day with a so called “difficult client” (That is how he used to address him before).
About a year after the course, he walked in to our office and shared with us that he had increased his sales results by at least 3 times every month and in one particular month, he achieved more than 4 times the target. And the best part was that he achieved his results without having to resort to any "Sales Tactics” that he had been taught. He was now selling with alignment!
Most people think that learning tactics and strategies (external behaviours) will give them better results and while we do think that skills are important, as we can see from Jonathan’s experience, it is even more important to develop the "inner game” - the game of our perceptions, values, beliefs and intention.
Transform your inner game and transform not just selling, but almost every area of your life!
One of the beliefs NLP works from is that change can be quick and simple and this change can be long lasting. This belief keeps getting stronger and stronger for us every time we see magical change happen right in front of our eyes!
Here is one experience....
One of the ladies participating in the Practitioner Program had been struggling with her weight and the aches and pains that came with it. She mentioned to us that she was getting severe pain in her waist. She had been to doctors but there was no relief. She had finally accepted that the pain was something that she would have to live with.
One of the guesses we took was that the weight and the pains was emotional rather than physical. Sometimes we tend to store unresolved emotions in our body which can cause various problems.
We did a quick Submodality and imagination process with her, and helped her to be aware of the pain and shift certain elements to the point where she started feeling and seeing the pain going out of her.
That day when she went back home she realized something surprising!! The pain was no longer there. She also tried hard to find the pain... Made certain movements... tried pressing the area that used to hurt.... but the pain was nowhere to be found!!
This was just a 5 minutes process.... which helped her heal her body.
Love our Incredible Amazing mind!!!
